Advanced Calibration

This calibration is not mandatory for using this app. It is only required if the additional audio processors will be used, including "Normalization", "Compression" and "NR Encoding". These audio processors are the advanced digital means for optimizing analog tape recording. But most of them may not work right-away without knowing the characteristics of the targeting analog tape and recorder as a system. To be specific, the characteristics will be given by 3 audio parameters, which are: the Reference Level, the Maximum Output Level, and the Signal to Noise Ratio. These parameters are set by dragging the 3 sliders for "Ref. dB", "Max. dB" and "Min. dB" respectively. The procedure is described below:

(1) Mouse drag the "Max. dB" slider to a position between -10 dBFS and -6 dBFS (to leave decent headroom for the digital audio processor to work with).

(2) Select "Peak" under "Normalization".

(3) Determine headroom in number of dBs (how to), denoted as MOL.
(4) Determine signal/noise ratio in number of dBs (how to), denoted as SNR.
(5) Mouse drag the "Ref. dB" slider to the position that is lower than the "Max. dB" by MOL dB. In other words, move the "Ref. dB" slider to have the label under the "Max. dB" slider reads the MOL dB.
(6) Mouse drag the "Min. dB" slider to the position that is lower than the "Ref. dB" by SNR dB. In other words, move the "Min. dB" slider to have the label under it shows SNR dB.

(7) Turn on the tape recorder, start recording on a tape.
(8) Temporarily turn on the building-in test tone generator by selecting "400Hz" or "1kHz" (do not select "Pink").
(9) Adjust the computer's audio volume control, or the tape recorder's recording level knob...
(10) Until the tape recorder's meter is pointing to the "0 dB" mark.
(11) Turn off the test tone generator by selecting "None".

Note 1: Once this calibration is done, please always engage one of the Normalization processors (do not select "none" for it).

Note 2: For a compact cassette tape, this app comes with a built-in wizard to guide the user through the steps:
